If you write code for a living (or you're trying to) you've probably noticed that the IDE wars have gotten weird. Autocomplete isn't the selling point anymore. The pitch now is "give the AI a goal, walk away, come back to working code." And the two names everyone keeps throwing around are Cursor and Windsurf.

I've spent the last few weeks coding in both daily, and the short version is this: they're closer than the marketing makes them sound, but they have real personality differences that'll make one feel obviously right for you. Let's get into it.

The quick verdict

Cursor is faster, leaner, and has the better tab-completion experience. Windsurf is the more thoughtful agent: it plans better on large codebases and recovers from its own mistakes more gracefully. Both cost $20/month for Pro, so price isn't the deciding factor anymore.

If you mostly want a supercharged VS Code that reads your mind, pick Cursor. If you want an agent you can hand a vague task to and trust to come back with something coherent, pick Windsurf.

What they actually are

Both are forks of VS Code. That matters more than it sounds: your existing keybindings, extensions, themes, and muscle memory all come along for the ride. The difference is in what got layered on top.

Cursor started as a better autocomplete and grew into an agent. The tab-completion ("Cursor Tab") is still the feature people rave about: it predicts multi-line edits, refactors across a file as you type, and does the thing where you accept one suggestion and it immediately suggests the next three edits that logically follow. It's eerie.

Windsurf started as an agent and grew a code editor around it. Their flagship feature, Cascade, is a multi-step AI that reads your whole project, plans a sequence of edits across files, executes them, runs your tests, reads the errors, and fixes its own mistakes. When it works, it feels like pair programming with someone who's more patient than you are.

Pricing: finally a tie

As of March 2026, both tools charge $20/month for Pro. Windsurf raised its Pro tier from $15 to $20 and moved from credit-based to quota-based pricing. Cursor has been at $20 the whole time. For teams, both charge $40/user/month.

Windsurf now offers a $200/month Max tier with effectively unlimited premium model usage, which is attractive if you're hammering Claude Sonnet or GPT all day. Cursor's usage-based billing above the Pro limit can get expensive fast if you're not paying attention: keep an eye on the meter.

Free tiers: both exist. Both are fine for casually trying the product but will frustrate you within a week if you're actually shipping. Budget for Pro.

Agent mode: Cascade vs Cursor Agent

This is where the real fight happens. Both tools let you give a natural-language instruction ("add email validation to the signup form") and watch the AI propose edits across multiple files. The UX is nearly identical: prompt, watch the agent work, accept or reject each diff.

The differences show up on hard tasks.

Windsurf's Cascade does better planning on large codebases. Its "Fast Context" retrieval (powered by SWE-grep) is legitimately faster than Cursor's context search: I've clocked it at roughly 8, 10× on repos over 50k lines. Cascade also handles long-running tasks better. With the Wave 13 release, Windsurf added parallel agent sessions, so you can have two Cascade instances working on different parts of your codebase simultaneously. That's a real productivity unlock for bigger projects.

Cursor's Agent is punchier on small, well-scoped tasks. It's faster to start, faster to finish, and the diff review UI is cleaner. Cursor also introduced "Automations": always-on agents triggered by events from Slack, Linear, GitHub, or webhooks. Think of it as a background agent that files a PR when your Linear ticket gets a specific label. Windsurf's answer is "Cascade Hooks," which do pre- and post-action triggers but aren't as tightly wired to external tools yet.

If your codebase is small or you're working on isolated features, Cursor Agent will feel snappier. If you're in a sprawling monorepo, Cascade's planning pays off.

Tab completion: Cursor still wins

I want to give Windsurf credit where it's due: their "Supercomplete" inline suggestions are solid, and they've closed the gap a lot. But Cursor Tab is still the best inline completion on the market. It predicts cursor-jumping edits (you hit tab and the cursor teleports to the next place you need to change), chains multi-line refactors, and understands your project's conventions better after a few hours of use.

This is the feature I miss most when I switch to Windsurf. If you spend most of your coding time writing code by hand (rather than delegating to an agent), this alone may decide it for you.

Models and the ChatGPT/Claude question

Both tools let you pick from Claude Sonnet, GPT-5, Gemini, and their own house models. Both default to Claude Sonnet for agent work because it's the current pound-for-pound champion at following multi-step engineering instructions. Cursor leans on its house model ("cursor-small") for fast tab completions: that's part of why the latency feels so low. Windsurf uses SWE-grep, their own retrieval model, to speed up context gathering. Both companies are doing real ML work, not just shipping wrappers.

Who each tool is for

Cursor is for you if:

  • You live in the editor and care most about typing speed and flow
  • You want the best inline tab completion, period
  • You work on smaller codebases or well-scoped features
  • You want tight integrations with Slack/Linear/GitHub via Automations
  • You switched from VS Code and want the least friction

Windsurf is for you if:

  • You want to delegate whole tasks and review results, not type alongside the AI
  • You work in a large codebase where context gathering matters
  • You need parallel agent sessions (two or more agents working simultaneously)
  • You want generous usage limits with the $200 Max tier
  • You're building something from scratch and want an agent that plans before it acts

What about Claude Code and GitHub Copilot?

Fair question. Claude Code is Anthropic's CLI-based coding agent: no IDE, just a terminal. It's excellent if you live in the shell and want the agent to write files, run tests, and commit. But for people who want a visual diff review and GUI workflow, Cursor and Windsurf are a better fit. GitHub Copilot has improved a lot but still lags both on agent capability. Copilot's tab completion is roughly on par with Windsurf's Supercomplete, but its agent mode is clunkier than either Cursor's or Cascade's. If you're locked into Copilot because your company pays for it, you're not suffering, but you'd feel a real upgrade switching.

Honest caveats

Both tools change fast. Features I call out here may be ahead or behind by the time you read this. Check each product's changelog before you commit to a year-long subscription.

Both can also be confidently wrong. Cascade will sometimes write "working" code that compiles and passes tests but does the wrong thing. Cursor Agent will happily delete code it decided was unused. Read the diffs. This is not the stage of AI coding where you can walk away and come back to finished features: not yet.

And both will run up your API bill if you're not watching. Cursor's usage-based overages and Windsurf's credit system at lower tiers can both surprise you.

The bottom line

Cursor is the better daily driver for most developers. Windsurf is the better agent for complex, multi-file work. Neither is a mistake. If you can afford to try both (and the free tiers exist for exactly this reason), do it: after a week of each, you'll know which one you want to keep.

For me, I've landed on Cursor as my main editor with Windsurf open in a second window when I have a big refactor to delegate. That's probably overkill for most people, but if you're shipping seriously, it's worth the $40/month.
